Thalassiosira pseudonana is a small diatom (4.5-8 µm x 6-10 µm) that is used in the shrimp and bivalve larviculture industry. To better understand the interplay between redox balance and organic matter secretion, we reconstructed a genome-scale metabolic model of Thalassiosira pseudonana strain CCMP 1335, a model for diatom molecular biology and physiology, with a 60-year history of studies. The exoskeleton showed a 100-times increase in Am-241 concentration over the course of about a week. The mutation rate is not an abiotic process with random variation at a uniform rate across the genome (Bromham, 2011). To facilitate harvesting and avoid expensive biomass recovery processes currently applied in algal biofuel systems, a fatty acid secretion strategy was employed in the cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. Eukaryotic algae that are distantly related to land plants are classified as Stramenopiles (or Heterokonts), including Bacillariophyta (diatoms), Phaeophyta (brown algae), Pelagophyte (golden-brown algae), and Eustigmatophyceae (Nannochloropsis). Adhiambo and colleagues suggested that this difference may result from the greater stability of the L. mexicana flagellum, from a difference in regulation of the steady-state concentrations of unassembled flagellar proteins, or from an inability to recruit flagellar proteins to the base of the flagellum in the absence of this dynein HC gene. elegans, and mouse mutants with defects in dynein 2. L. mexicana is diploid throughout its lifecycle, and, although both alleles of LmxDHC2.1 were disrupted in multiple cell lines, the disrupted alleles invariably occurred together with a copy of the wild-type gene, suggesting aneuploidy of the chromosome containing LmxDHC2.1. Hildebrand and Dahlin (2000) showed that NAT genes are strongly induced by N starvation, but repressed in the presence of NH4 (even NH4NO3); in contrast, the AMT genes are less regulated by the presence or absence of N, but are always active (Hildebrand, 2005). They do so, in theory, by sensing changing conditions and adapting their physiology accordingly. PCC 6803 (Kaneko et al., 1996) was the first cyanobacteria to be fully sequenced. A molecular divergence of approximately 0.5% per Ma in unicellular eukaryotes is relatively fast compared to their multicellular counterparts. Thus, their molecular divergence is only about 0.07% over a Ma. Although molecular techniques have been used in oceanographic studies for many years, it is only recently that the ready availability of genomic information for algae has flourished (Grossman, 2005). Ectocarpus siliculosus (Cock et al., 2010) in Phaeophyta and Aureococcus anophagefferens (Gobler et al., 2011) in Pelagophytes have also been sequenced. The genus Thalassiosira contains >100 species, with T. pseudonana being a marine small (4–6 μm), centric, unicellular diatom belonging to the Coscinodiscophyceae and quite indistinctive by light microscopy. Kohl and colleagues proposed that the flagellar attachment zone has a role in cytoskeleton elongation, basal body/kinetoplast segregation, and determination of the site of cytokinesis; the inability to form a new flagellum affected assembly of the new flagellar attachment zone, with consequent defects in cytokinesis and cell shape determination.
