It's also quite likely that construction adhesive was applied to the joists (reduces squeaking) if the construction is at all recent. We pulled out the existing carpet along with a 5/8''particle board underlayment. I think the fire thing has been blown out of proportion with engineered lumber. Is the extra 1/4 inch really needed? Step 7: If everything looks good, use a pneumatic framing nailer to fasten the boards to the joists. Underlayment is a special grade of APA plywood that is attached on top of the subfloor to provide a durable and resistant layer under finish flooring. Place a sheet of 3/4-inch plywood with the sanded side facing upwards into one corner of the room, perpendicular to the orientation of the subfloor. Remove 3/4 plywood subfloor to install 3/4" hardwood flooring. Put a nail every 8-10 inches on the surface. The safest, most prudent course is to install tile on top of a cement backerboard such as Durock, Wonderboard, or HardieBacker. The real danger I see is in the floor collapsing prematurely with firefighting personnel going into the building… Covering with drywall probably gets you most of the way to a solution, especially with smoke detectors… but if it were in my house, particularly if it were in a first floor with an unfinished basement, I’d op for the sprinklers. What kind of screws would you recommend for this job? In this installation, we used Portable Cable’s Round Head framing nailer. To avoid buckling, subfloor panels should be spaced with a 1/8-inch gap at all edges and ends to provide room for naturally occurring expansion.
